{"id":9897,"date":"2012-02-04T13:34:00","date_gmt":"2012-02-04T19:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=9897"},"modified":"2012-02-04T13:34:00","modified_gmt":"2012-02-04T19:34:00","slug":"i-wonder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/blog\/2012\/02\/04\/i-wonder\/","title":{"rendered":"I wonder?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the past few months I have been debating on putting my \u201cunused\u201d AT-180 into service.&nbsp; I have no excuse as to why it was not being used before.&nbsp; Well maybe two little ones anyway.&nbsp; My only two excuses I can think of are:<\/p>\n<p>1.&nbsp; It was tucked away in the <strong>motor<\/strong> <strong>home<\/strong> waiting on a trip and the <strong>use<\/strong> of the vertical antenna that will supply coax to the <strong>tuner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2.&nbsp; It is only good for a coax feed antenna. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1cec75eccdb708eb8354af353cef14b7_at-180.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"1cec75eccdb708eb8354af353cef14b7_at-180\" border=\"0\" alt=\"1cec75eccdb708eb8354af353cef14b7_at-180\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1cec75eccdb708eb8354af353cef14b7_at-180_thumb.jpg?resize=327%2C273\" width=\"327\" height=\"273\"\/><\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>I bought that <strong>unit<\/strong> with the Icom 706MKIIG way back in ????? You know I couldn\u2019t remember just when I bought that <strong>unit<\/strong>.&nbsp; It had to be before 2005 as It was in the old motorhome.&nbsp; In <strong>fact<\/strong> I bought it specifically for that purpose with a backup to also be used in the house.&nbsp; Problem was in that house I didn\u2019t have a coax fed antenna.&nbsp; I had always used a tuned <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>feeder<\/strong> to a <strong>tuner<\/strong> setup for HF at <strong>home<\/strong> on an inverted V dipole.&nbsp; I know I could have gotten or made a balun to go from the tuned <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>feeder<\/strong> to coax or could have actually put up dipoles fed with coax but that just never happened.&nbsp; Thinking hard, as all thinking is hard for me these days, it had to be around 2002 or 2003 that I bought the <strong>radio<\/strong> with the <strong>tuner<\/strong> in a package <strong>deal<\/strong>.&nbsp; Seems that&nbsp; there was a special <strong>going<\/strong> <strong>one<\/strong> winter that if you bought the 706 you could get the at180 for half price or maybe 30% off or something so I jumped and bought a package <strong>deal<\/strong> but just never put that <strong>tuner<\/strong> into real <strong>use<\/strong>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>With that all said, I did <strong>use<\/strong> it but only limited in the motorhome on extended trips.&nbsp; I had a vertical on the back of the <strong>motor<\/strong> <strong>home<\/strong> that, with the <strong>tuner<\/strong>, I didn\u2019t have to make too many changes to.&nbsp; I also experimented with a&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qsl.net\/ve3mcf\/elecraft_reflect\/Antenna_Snake.txt\">\u201cgrass snake\u201d antenna<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/snakepic.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"snakepic\" border=\"0\" alt=\"snakepic\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/snakepic_thumb.jpg?resize=640%2C174\" width=\"640\" height=\"174\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note: if you\u2019re interested in the Grass Snake and it appears a bit harder to find on Google\u2026 <strong>check<\/strong> these two articles I have saved.&nbsp; One from way back that I was <strong>going<\/strong> on to start and <strong>one<\/strong> more recent that wants you got get rid of the received signals to long coax runs\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/Hamstuff\/Stuff\/On-Ground.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">On Ground Low Noise antenna<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/Hamstuff\/Stuff\/coax_leadin.doc\" target=\"_blank\">coax leadin antenna?<\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know why it was not the first <strong>thing<\/strong> I moved in when I put up the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radioworks.com\/ccw160.html\" target=\"_blank\">Carolina Windom 160<\/a>.&nbsp; I mean that was the perfect setup for the <strong>tuner<\/strong>.&nbsp; A coax feed antenna for all bands.&nbsp; What was I thinking about?&nbsp; Well actually like I said before, probably not thinking was the clue.&nbsp;&nbsp; I finally made the move and pulled from it\u2019s hiding spot in the motorhome, placed it on the bench and looked at it.&nbsp; I had forgot how to hook it up.&nbsp; Hell, how hard can it be?&nbsp; But to keep from making another high dollar mistake, I pulled up the <strong>IC<\/strong>-706 manual that I have conveniently saved on my Ham computer, found the <strong>page<\/strong> marker and went to that <strong>page<\/strong> and ???? Only <strong>one<\/strong> <strong>page<\/strong> on how to hook it up?&nbsp; I guess I forgot how simple it was paired with the ICOM radios\u2026 <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/linking.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"linking\" border=\"0\" alt=\"linking\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/linking_thumb.jpg?resize=640%2C322\" width=\"640\" height=\"322\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t even require any external power, that comes from the <strong>radio<\/strong>.&nbsp; All I could do was mumble to myself &#8211; stupid, stupid, stupid\u2026. <\/p>\n<p>Once hooked up I did have to remember to pull the <strong>plug<\/strong>\u2026 the <strong>tuner<\/strong> <strong>plug<\/strong> that I have for the 706 to put it into \u201ctune mode\u2019 for the old style tuning on the MFJ 989.&nbsp; You know, twist the inductor to the previously marked <strong>number<\/strong> , twist the first knob, twist the second, tweak the two of them several times while hitting the tune button several times as you are too slow to get it set right in the few seconds it transmits\u2026. DUH!\u2026 I then had to go into <strong>SET<\/strong> MODE setup (had to re-read the manual but I already had that open\u2026 and set <strong>number<\/strong> 27 to \u201cON\u201d so it would work the AT180\u2026 when all&nbsp; that was done, it was like \u201cPOOF\u201d magic happened and it happened fast.&nbsp; I had to hit the tune button a few times after I turned on the tune mode on each <strong>band<\/strong> but once set I was good to go on any <strong>band<\/strong> at any <strong>time<\/strong>\u2026 in <strong>fact<\/strong> I even caught myself switching from 10 to 40 to 80 to 15 meters to \u201cjust <strong>check<\/strong> it out\u201d\u2026 I am still amazing myself on how lazy or how adverse to change I get at times.&nbsp; I have some great toys and tools but seldom <strong>use<\/strong> all the potential available.&nbsp; This <strong>time<\/strong> I am really enjoying an old toy that should have been used a lot more.&nbsp; I was even thinking that I needed to buy <strong>one<\/strong> of those new fangled auto-tuners.&nbsp; Well I may still <strong>need<\/strong> a new <strong>one<\/strong> that can handle more than 180 watts.&nbsp; That is when I figure out if I really <strong>need<\/strong> to get another amplifier or not.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You see I sold my old <strong>one<\/strong> some <strong>time<\/strong> ago and a few months after I am thinking I <strong>need<\/strong> a new solid state amp for that once in a year <strong>time<\/strong> I get on 80 or 160 meters and have to fight the noise or \u201cover-loaders\u201d\u2026 I guess that will wait as I am having too much fun on 40 and above doing PSK with 35 watts.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>My question from the title\u2026.
