{"id":9379,"date":"2012-01-01T23:19:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-02T05:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=9379"},"modified":"2012-01-01T23:19:00","modified_gmt":"2012-01-02T05:19:00","slug":"readinrightin-rithmatic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/blog\/2012\/01\/01\/readinrightin-rithmatic\/","title":{"rendered":"Readin,rightin, Rithmatic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yep, it was <strong>one<\/strong> of those days.\u00a0 Actually yesterday was pretty close.<\/p>\n<p>First off, yesterday we did go to the Men\u2019s BB game\u2026They lost but gave a good effort.\u00a0 They are just really depleted with two leaving and two injured they have a 6 or 7 man rotation and that was not enough in the end.\u00a0 Plus the offense just is not there for this team.<\/p>\n<p>For today, it was a stay at home <strong>day<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is not because we partied into the night either.\u00a0 I hung in there until about 11:20\u2026 I saw the <strong>ball<\/strong> drop in NY and all the prep for locally in OKC but once you see <strong>one<\/strong> <strong>ball<\/strong> drop, do you really <strong>need<\/strong> to see another?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I take this from <strong>reading<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thereformedbroker.com\/2012\/01\/01\/dont-lose-money\/\">The Reformed Broker<\/a>\u00a0 <em>\u201cFor no good reason, we place an artificial line between the prior year and the new <strong>year<\/strong>. Even the most confident analysts do not publish predictions for a <strong>year<\/strong> ahead in May. Yet, many analysts <strong>feel<\/strong> empowered to fire up their crystal balls in December and <strong>January<\/strong>.\u201d \u2013 <\/em>The same thinking applies to all parts of life, not just <strong>reading<\/strong> and dealing with analysts.\u00a0 Everyone, including me, has to come up with something special in hopes of having a better <strong>year<\/strong> next <strong>year<\/strong> than <strong>last<\/strong>.\u00a0 Well not everyone as some probably had a really good <strong>year<\/strong> <strong>last<\/strong> <strong>year<\/strong>\u2026 think the people that did win the lottery\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/holidays\/newyears\/beliefs.asp\">One of the The traditions here<\/a>:\u00a0 Eat black-eyed peas,\u00a0 actually I think you are supposed to eat 365 of them nasty things for good <strong>luck<\/strong>.\u00a0 Maybe that is why I never have really good <strong>luck<\/strong>, I refuse to eat that many in <strong>one<\/strong> setting\u2026 in fact I do not like black-eyed peas\u2026 like my kids used to say about beans \u201cthey taste like dirt\u201d\u2026 well I really like other types of beans but those peas are just nasty.\u00a0 Several others are listed in the link.\u00a0 Many I never heard of but some I may <strong>need<\/strong> to follow more closely? There are numerous things about eating on New Years for <strong>luck<\/strong> and The six major categories of Good Luck foods for New Year and they are grapes, greens, fish, pork, legumes (those damn peas) and cakes\u2026 12 grapes at midnight (got mine a little early) but midnight in NYC should be ok?, Cooked greens, got some on the pizza we had before and after, Legumes \u2013 I ate some sweet pea pods with supper tonight but no black-eyed peas,\u00a0 that has to count right?\u00a0 Fish?\u00a0 well I missed that as I couldn\u2019t\u2019 find the can of sardines I thought we had, probably should have cooked up <strong>one<\/strong> of those tilapia fillets we had in the freezer but I am not hungry now, Cakes \u2013 somewhere we heard doughnuts were the ticket so we got some yesterday and I had a \u201ccake\u201d <strong>doughnut<\/strong> for breakfast \u2013 probably should have stuck with my oatmeal but that <strong>doughnut<\/strong> with sprinkles sure was good\u2026 You can <strong>check<\/strong> out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epicurious.com\/articlesguides\/holidays\/newyearsday\/luckyfoods\">Lucky Foods page here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once I had finished up my \u201cgood <strong>luck<\/strong>\u201d <strong>doughnut<\/strong> and ate some more grapes, I did little to nothing.\u00a0 I read some blog pages, did a little financial stuff and mostly sat on my tail\u2026 A little after noon I was informed that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/wx\/usa.htm\">weather web page<\/a> was locked up at 3am\u2026 so I proceeded to do the <strong>January<\/strong> 1 maintenance on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambientweather.com\/wmorscwiprwe.html\">weather station<\/a> (the Oregon Scientific WR-968).\u00a0 I usually forget to do all that until some <strong>time<\/strong> in February after we have had rain or snow and I have to cheat the system to get it to show correctly but I got right on it today.\u00a0 When I got out to the shop to <strong>check<\/strong> it showed a lock on the sensors that <strong>one<\/strong> had a low battery and <strong>one<\/strong> was not coming in at all.\u00a0 That tends to lock it up if that <strong>one<\/strong> is <strong>one<\/strong> of the 3 critical ones (outside temp, inside temp with barometer, and possible channel 1 if I have it set to be the outside temp instead of the real <strong>one<\/strong> that is hanging under the ceiling of the back deck.\u00a0 I swap to channel 1 because the real outside shows about 5 degrees or more higher temp and 10 to 15% lower humidity than the <strong>one<\/strong> that is on the north side of the <strong>house<\/strong> in the shade and about 5 ft. from the ground (proper siting for it)\u2026 Once I saw that with the low battery it was <strong>time<\/strong> to do all the swaps before they caught me. So, I<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 replaced all the batteries in the collection <strong>monitor<\/strong> (found they were dead or low anyway and it had been running on the external power).<\/p>\n<p>2. Swapped the battery in the indoor unit that showed low battery.<\/p>\n<p>3. Reset channel 1 as I had replaced the battery in it 2 days ago and forgot to <strong>check<\/strong> all the <strong>monitor<\/strong> units that it was <strong>working<\/strong> with.<\/p>\n<p>4. Reset the main <strong>monitor<\/strong> unit so it searched out all the remotes and they were all showing good batteries.<\/p>\n<p>5. Then I had to reset the clock in the main <strong>monitor<\/strong> to be with the real <strong>time<\/strong>\u2026 it was off by 30 minutes due to a power down I suspect when the batteries were low..<\/p>\n<p>6. I then also reset the \u201cat Sea-level\u201d barometer <strong>reading<\/strong> to match the rest of the units in my area (mostly the official <strong>one<\/strong> at the airport).<\/p>\n<p>7. Fixed the software adjustments I had made <strong>last<\/strong> <strong>year<\/strong> for rain and other things.<\/p>\n<p>8. Then I had to reset the <strong>monitor<\/strong> in the <strong>house<\/strong> that is not linked to the computer but picks up all the remote units for me to read with out going outside and as a double <strong>check<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing is easy with some of this stuff but I think I have it all <strong>working<\/strong> and back on with out any \u201cfunny\u201d adjustments to make it match up.\u00a0 I wish I could get the wind anemometer to a better location.\u00a0 It is always below actual wind speed due to it being blocked by trees on the west and North west, the roof of the <strong>house<\/strong> to the direct south and a hill to the east.\u00a0 I did put it up on the top of the \u201cdetached garage\u201d that makes it about 25 ft. off the ground<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_3216.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_3216\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_3216_thumb.jpg?resize=329%2C437\" alt=\"IMG_3216\" width=\"329\" height=\"437\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The top of the door is 14ft. the pitch is about 6 ft. and the pole I put it on was 4 ft.<\/p>\n<p>but the trees to the west are 50 ft. trees and only about 125 feet away so not much else I can do about that direction.<\/p>\n<p>Once I got all that <strong>working<\/strong> and satisfied myself it was ok, I took a well deserved nap.\u00a0 First <strong>one<\/strong> I have had in about 6 weeks.\u00a0 I keep saying I am going to get my nap in but somehow I always get busy on something and it just doesn\u2019t happen.\u00a0 Felt real good today.<\/p>\n<p>That was about it for my <strong>day<\/strong> \u2013 the first <strong>day<\/strong> of this new <strong>year<\/strong>.\u00a0 Oh I did get on the air briefly, while <strong>working<\/strong> on the weather <strong>station<\/strong>, and listened to some PSK signals.\u00a0 Had <strong>one<\/strong> from South Africa (ZS6??? don\u2019t remember it all now)\u00a0 on 15 meters that I wanted to work but he faded out when I had a few minutes\u2026 then later I see he was back but never got around to <strong>working<\/strong> that <strong>one<\/strong>.\u00a0 I also didn\u2019t get back to the radio this evening like planned.\u00a0 Maybe tomorrow evening I will get fired up.\u00a0\u00a0 I also <strong>need<\/strong> to get on my grounding project with the jeep radio and remove some of the noise on HF there but that is for another <strong>day<\/strong>.\u00a0 &#8211; WD0AJG<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yep, it was one of those days.
