Yep, I have accomplished another small feat.\u00a0 Even though it was damn cold out this morning<\/strong> I was set on getting those new batteries mounted and working.\u00a0 I did waste an hour or two this morning<\/strong> in the house waiting on the big warm-up.\u00a0 I made a few calls, read my email and did a little stuff for work, even though I am supposed to be on vacation, but eventually I had to get out and get those batteries installed.<\/p>\n

As I wrote yesterday, the first accomplishment is to put on those old work clothes that if they get acid on them they can be trashed\u2026 Once I was properly dressed I headed out the door.\u00a0 To be properly dressed I had one<\/strong> more thing<\/strong> to put on\u2026 another of those great gadgets everyone should have.\u00a0 I invested all of $2 for these a few years ago when it became apparent that my knees and the ground<\/strong> were not made for each other\u2026<\/p>\n

\"kneepads\"<\/a><\/p>\n

They sure feel better than the hard concrete or worse yet the rocks in RV<\/strong> parking areas when you have to crawl around to make<\/strong> connections or hunt for stuff you know you have in the under compartments.<\/p>\n

Next thing<\/strong> is get the proper socket to tighten the lugs on the top of the batteries, these have studs and the ends of my cables are screw on types.\u00a0 It seems to make<\/strong> for a cleaner and easier swap of something that is always a pain with corrosion and all but these didn\u2019t have any corrosion on them that I could tell.\u00a0 Cleaned them up a little and put a little light oil on them to make<\/strong> the thread easier.\u00a0 put the batteries on the tray and put on the connections and only had a few sparks when I bumped the wrench against ground<\/strong> while tightening the positive end\u2026 that shows the batteries have\u00a0 juice, right<\/strong>?\u00a0 anyway this is the end product\u2026<\/p>\n

\"IMG_4708\"<\/a>\u00a0 Note: I didn\u2019t use<\/strong> the crescent wrench but it was handy if I needed it\u2026 ha!<\/p>\n

\"IMG_4710\"<\/a>Tray slid back and latched, all well at this point.<\/p>\n

Now for the real test, start the engine<\/strong>.\u00a0 So I got in, and first checked the digital meter and it shows 12.4 volts, that is good\u2026 then \u201cswitch on\u201d wait for all the warning bells to quit and fire it up\u2026 started immediately with out any block heat so the new batteries are good to go.<\/p>\n

I ran it until it aired up and warmed up, and while running I determined that I should use<\/strong> the new tire pressure<\/strong>\/fill unit I wrote of before in Repairs and riding in the rain<\/a>.\u00a0 That new Astro Pneumatic<\/a> gauge<\/strong> sure was nice.\u00a0 Topped them all up to 95psi quick and easy\u2026 well then why not top up all\u00a0 the Jeep tires too so got them all up to 32 psi and good thing<\/strong> I had one<\/strong> that was running at 19?\u00a0 I should check<\/strong> them more often but they are really hard to notice if they are not at correct pressure<\/strong> with out the gauge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In that same post I mentioned that this and the Pro-Fill should be added to the RV-Gizmos and Gadgets<\/a> that I copied from Greg White\u2019s blog \u2013 Our RV Adventures<\/a>.\u00a0 I will probably have to do an update of that at some point as I keep adding \u201cneat\u201d stuff that I really should have or we all should have for that matter.\u00a0 I need<\/strong> to make<\/strong> reference here that if you follow any of the RV<\/strong> specialist than you\u00a0 probably should read RV Tire Safety<\/a>.\u00a0 He does a good job or presenting facts about tires of all kinds.\u00a0 Seems there is always debates and mis-information on a lot<\/strong> of the forums as well as a lot<\/strong> of good but in my opinion you need<\/strong> to get several sources to compare and sort out the facts.\u00a0 His is real good for that.<\/p>\n

Back to my work, the above gauge<\/strong> is so much easier and better than the one<\/strong> I had for the big tires:<\/p>\n

\"IMG_4713\"<\/a>Yes it is an old version Truck gauge<\/strong> that at it\u2019s best was inaccurate and in-consistent.\u00a0 It was a \u201chorse-shoe\u201d type gauge<\/strong> when all you really needed was to get close.\u00a0 Today you can get accurate for about the same price so why not.<\/p>\n

One more thing<\/strong>, to make<\/strong> it all so much easier to air up the \u201chigh pressure<\/strong>\u201d tires I found that in my coach there was an air supply source with plug in the electrical compartment.\u00a0 That connection<\/strong> basically ran the air horns so I got the parts and put in a connection<\/strong> for the air hose<\/strong> and gauge<\/strong> to air up the tires from the engine<\/strong>.\u00a0 Since you need<\/strong> to run<\/strong> the engine<\/strong> to go places then it is best to just add a little time<\/strong> when your ready to leave to check<\/strong> the air in the tires and top them out.\u00a0 They will be at cold temps so you really need<\/strong> to have read\u00a0 the stuff from RV<\/strong> Tire Safety about load and pressure<\/strong> and air up according to your Tire and Manufacturer info.\u00a0 I know the new engines do not need<\/strong> to idle but if your performing service this way it doesn\u2019t hurt.\u00a0 My connections with a valve to keep it shut off until I Need it..<\/p>\n

\"IMG_4712\"<\/a>\u00a0 I keep all the air supplies in this small compartment \u2013 a 50 ft. hose<\/strong>, chucks, gauge<\/strong>, etc.\u00a0 they are all in a small zip lock bag and this area stays dry and fairly clean.\u00a0 I never leave the hose<\/strong> plugged in.\u00a0 Hidden to the far left is that valve for shutting off the supply to the hose<\/strong> connection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, I got all this done before noon.\u00a0\u00a0 I changed clothes and headed to town for lunch with the wife.\u00a0 Todays feast \u2013 Qdoba<\/a> and the \u201cpick-two\u201d menu.\u00a0 Sure do like the Mexican gumbo and the regular bowl is more than enough for two but the \u201cpick-two\u201d bowl is just about right<\/strong> for me.\u00a0 A short stop at Hobby Lobby for the wife and take her back to work and I headed home.\u00a0 My big accomplishment for the day was pretty much done.\u00a0 I did however decide to get the new bike out and put the GPS attachment on the handle-bar for my Etrex<\/a>.\u00a0 I have had that etrex for several years and use<\/strong> it for Geocaching and travel, etc.\u00a0 but I got a handlebar attachment for it so I and log my biking\u2026 I hope I do enough to log? Once that was on I had to try it out.\u00a0 Made a short run<\/strong>, little over a mile with about 150 ft. of elevation change.\u00a0 Some of that is pretty damn steep (to me).\u00a0 You know if you go down you have to come back up?\u00a0 Seems that I can walk that same route with out being near as leg tired as I was on that bike?\u00a0 Something about using different muscles I guess or something like that.\u00a0 That trip only took me a little over 10 minutes so not too bad but still no records there, it says I was averaging 5.6 mph while moving and I did ride the brake hard on the steep down part, nothing worse than a run<\/strong>-away bike with an old fart on it. With that, I felt is was time<\/strong> to rest up so took a seat in the shack (term for Ham radio room) and listened to the guys on 7.195mhz.<\/p>\n
