{"id":8243,"date":"2011-10-20T06:31:09","date_gmt":"2011-10-20T12:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=8243"},"modified":"2011-10-20T06:31:09","modified_gmt":"2011-10-20T12:31:09","slug":"sealing-the-coax-connections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/blog\/2011\/10\/20\/sealing-the-coax-connections\/","title":{"rendered":"Sealing the Coax connections?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have almost always used just electrical tape&#8230; I have used some of the gummy stuff that might have been supplied from the antenna maker but never went out of my way to get the extra <strong>protection<\/strong>. \u00a0Maybe I should as now I have several connection that are corroded and not working well? \u00a0 \u00a0Hell, I have most of my antennas down , broken, out of service due to that 90 MPH wind we had in August.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/P1010008.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"300\" width=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8248 aligncenter\" title=\"P1010008\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/P1010008-300x225.jpg?fit=300%2C300\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It bent the pipe <strong>tower<\/strong>, pulled the lead loose from my &#8220;make-shift&#8221; dual band mobile ON the <strong>pole<\/strong> below. I have not tested the dipole but it appears to be ok as it was lower but I don&#8217;t have anything up. \u00a0The welder was to have my new <strong>tower<\/strong> back a month ago and I am still waiting on that <strong>one<\/strong>. \u00a0Anyway here is a good <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>article<\/strong> on sealing coax connections. \u00a0\u00a0I <strong>need<\/strong> to get some seal for all of mine before they go back up.<\/p>\n<p>[recreading]<\/p>\n<p>That relates to the fact that I also have <strong>one<\/strong> length of older 9913 that got <strong>water<\/strong> in it (the 9913 is a <strong>hollow core<\/strong> with a spiral length of plastic thread to maintain the inner core). \u00a0I should have done a much better job os sealing the ends. \u00a0 It was strange that I put it up to a square 2mtr\/440 &#8220;<strong>SQUALO<\/strong>&#8221; antenna that I had purchased 15 to 20 years ago thinking I was <strong>going<\/strong> to do some higher SSB work, but just never got it up. \u00a0I had that opportunity to put it up \u00a0this past year and did using this old length of coax that, unfortunatley had been stored outside when we moved. \u00a0I put this anteanna on a 15 <strong>foot<\/strong> <strong>pole<\/strong> on the barn to do some testing:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_3765.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"300\" width=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8245 aligncenter\" title=\"IMG_3765\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_3765-300x225.jpg?fit=300%2C300\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I hope is that I can put them on the larger <strong>tower<\/strong> when I get it back. \u00a0I had put them up with that older 9913 and right after I get it all up and walk into the shop where I had <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>run<\/strong> the coax&#8230; there was <strong>water<\/strong> coming out around the connector on the <strong>floor<\/strong>&#8230; so much for that idea&#8230;.. Needless to say I didn&#8217;t get to use it <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>last<\/strong> <strong>winter<\/strong> and have yet to take it down. \u00a0I hate getting up on the <strong>roof<\/strong> and &#8220;manhandling&#8221; that 15 <strong>foot<\/strong> <strong>pole<\/strong> out of the tripod base it is in, not to mention having to undo the ends of my dipole that is on that same <strong>pole<\/strong>&#8230; but I <strong>need<\/strong> to get on that pretty soon if I am <strong>going<\/strong> to as it is getting colder here&#8230; while getting this <strong>picture<\/strong> for the post I also got the below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_3766.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"300\" width=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8246 aligncenter\" title=\"IMG_3766\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_3766-300x225.jpg?fit=300%2C300\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am sure we will have a few \u00a0more weeks of warmer weather but I <strong>need<\/strong> to get with this <strong>project<\/strong> if I intend to get it down and ready for the <strong>tower<\/strong>. \u00a0&#8211; WD0AJG<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have almost always used just electrical tape&#8230; I have used some of the gummy stuff that might have been supplied from the antenna maker but never went out of my way to get the extra protection.
