Pulled the below article and felt it was worth a post here –\u00a0For several years I did not have a braking system<\/strong> on my “TOAD”… I do now. \u00a0I pulled it behind an old Holiday Rambler 1000 – gas engine for several years and then moved up to the diesel pusher and just though, “heck the jeep is small no need” but after reading a lot and then finding out the laws, I got one<\/strong> put on for the jeep. \u00a0It is one<\/strong> of those you have to put in the floor board of the jeep and attached to the brake pedal. \u00a0If i had it to do over, I probably would opt for the SMI system<\/strong> off the air of the motorhome but the one<\/strong> I have only requires limited connection to power and it has a wireless transmitter to the receiver in the motorhome that shows when it is working so I do have a good monitor. \u00a0I can assure you there is a lot of difference when you have brakes on the “TOAD” . \u00a0 \u00a0Better safe<\/strong> than sorry. \u00a0– WD0AJG<\/p>\n

Most U.S. States and Canadian Provinces have their own laws on the requirement for brakes on a towed trailer<\/strong>. The word trailer<\/strong> also applies to a vehicle<\/strong> being towed behind a motor<\/strong> home<\/strong>. These laws are normally based on the amount of weight<\/strong> being towed. One problem<\/strong> with this is that it might be legal to tow a 2,000 pound trailer<\/strong> with no brakes in the state where you live, but as soon as you cross the state line<\/strong> of a bordering state it is illegal to tow the same trailer<\/strong> without brakes. Add to this your insurance<\/strong> company may not cover you in the event of an accident involving a trailer<\/strong> with no braking system<\/strong>. Again, the most important reason is for your safety<\/strong> and the safety<\/strong> of others.<\/p>\n

The brakes on a tow vehicle<\/strong> or motor<\/strong> home<\/strong> are designed by the vehicle<\/strong> manufacturer to stop<\/strong> the weight<\/strong> of that particular vehicle<\/strong>, not the additional weight<\/strong> being towed behind it. This additional weight<\/strong> adds a substantial increase to the distance required to stop<\/strong> safely.<\/p>\n

Travel<\/strong> trailers and 5th wheels come equipped with electric brakes and RV<\/strong> dealers educate the RV<\/strong> consumer on the requirements for adding an electronic brake control to the tow vehicle<\/strong>. Some pop-ups are ordered with brakes and some without. Again, this is often times based on the braking laws for the state you live in. Keep in mind that once you cross a state line<\/strong> it could become illegal. My advice is if you’re going to purchase a pop-up get one<\/strong> that has brakes.<\/p>\n

The real culprit for disregarding braking laws is a motor<\/strong> home<\/strong> towing a vehicle<\/strong> behind it. Most people<\/strong> assume that because of the size of the motor<\/strong> home<\/strong> there is no need for a supplemental brake system<\/strong> on the towed vehicle<\/strong> and sometimes RV<\/strong> dealers fail to communicate the requirement for a supplemental braking system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I for one<\/strong> was guilty of towing a vehicle<\/strong> without a braking system<\/strong> for quite some time. A close call, while driving through a major city during rush hour, suddenly educated me on how important it is. Another thing<\/strong> that surprises people<\/strong> is how much the vehicle<\/strong> they’re towing actually weighs. Take your towed vehicle<\/strong> to a set of scales and have it weighed. Make sure it has everything in it that will be in it when you are towing it. After you weigh it double check to make sure the receiver on the motor<\/strong> home<\/strong> is rated to tow that amount of weight<\/strong> and that you aren’t exceeding any of the motor<\/strong> home<\/strong> weight<\/strong> ratings like the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR<\/strong>). The GCWR<\/strong> is the maximum permissible weight<\/strong> of the fully loaded motor<\/strong> home<\/strong> and the fully loaded towed vehicle<\/strong> combined. Most RV<\/strong> chassis manufacturers base their GCWR<\/strong> on the assumption that a supplemental brake system<\/strong> is being used.<\/p>\n

Regardless of the brake system<\/strong> that best suits your individual needs the important thing<\/strong> is that you have one<\/strong>. There are many reasons to have a braking system<\/strong> on your towed vehicle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1) It’s the law
\n2) It can void your vehicle<\/strong> warranty
\n3) It can void your insurance<\/strong>
\n4) It will reduce wear and tear on RV<\/strong> brakes and other components
\n5) Liability<\/p>\n

But, most importantly it SAFELY reduces the stopping distance and helps to protect you, your loved ones and the safety<\/strong> of others.<\/p>\n
