Getting Your Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) License<\/b><\/p>\n

This is an exciting time<\/strong> for amateur radio<\/strong>. We have had so many changes due to technology. Our radio<\/strong> signals<\/strong> can be bounced off the moon back to the other side of the Earth, carried to very specific destinations over the internet, re-transmitted by satellites, carried with digital signals<\/strong> or simply transmitted and received the way they have been since the beginning with analog signals<\/strong> and simple radios.<\/p>\n

Many people fear having to learn Morse code, but Morse code<\/strong> testing is no longer required for advanced licenses. The interesting thing, however, is that Morse code<\/strong> seems to be more popular than ever.<\/p>\n

Here are some tips for getting your amateur radio<\/strong> license:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Contact a local Ham radio<\/strong> club. Many clubs will have members who can mentor or “elmer” you. Take advantage of that. Ham radio<\/strong> operators are always looking for someone new to talk to and share the hobby with so they will be glad to help<\/strong> you. Almost certainly, some member will be willing to let you talk on his radio<\/strong> and see if you like it.
    \n(Here in Stillwater – our local club does testing almost every meeting night. We meet the first Tuesday over every month at the Salvation Army building 1101 S. Lowry – usually around 7 pm. We also have a weekly net on the local 145.35 repeater. The website is K5SRC<\/a>) <\/li>\n
  2. Read a good Ham License<\/strong> Book or go to classes provided by a club<\/li>\n
  3. Download the appropriate question pool from the ARRL – The American Radio Relay League<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  4. Go take your test<\/strong>. Don’t worry, it’s really not that hard if you study the question pools.<\/li>\n
  5. Once you pass the test, buy a radio<\/strong> and use it. Don’t be intimidated. When you make contact<\/strong> for the first time, let your contact<\/strong> know it’s your first time<\/strong> and he will probably help<\/strong> you along.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It’s a great time<\/strong> to be involved in Ham Radio. Getting involved is easier than it has ever been and there is a huge supply of radios. Now it’s your turn to get started in Ham radio<\/strong> today.<\/p>\n
