Things I remember -1956? &#8211; Grandma Peterman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I hardly have any memories of Grandma Jessie.&nbsp; She passed on when I was just 5 so we didn\u2019t have a great <strong>deal<\/strong> of <strong>time<\/strong> together so that I could have a <strong>lot<\/strong> of memories.&nbsp; This is an old <strong>picture<\/strong> of <strong>Grandpa<\/strong> and Grandma Peterman<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/image-2.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/image_thumb-2.png?resize=419%2C583\" width=\"419\" height=\"583\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I do remember staying with her and <strong>Grandpa<\/strong> a few times when my parents were off \u201csquare-dancing\u201d.&nbsp; Mom and <strong>Dad<\/strong> used to do that every Saturday Night during the 50\u2019s.&nbsp; I would have to assume I stayed there a <strong>lot<\/strong> more than a few times because there <strong>place<\/strong> was only a mile away our farm.&nbsp; I remember Mom and <strong>Dad<\/strong> would drop us off at Grandma\u2019s and we would get to do things there, until Grandma decided that it was bed <strong>time<\/strong> and I would get a bed made on the couch and my little brother had a crib.&nbsp; Usually when that happened Grandma was going to bed but <strong>Grandpa<\/strong> was still watching <strong>TV<\/strong>.&nbsp; The couch was a fine <strong>place<\/strong> because I could watch <strong>Grandpa<\/strong>.&nbsp; I <strong>couldn<\/strong>\u2019t hardly see the <strong>TV<\/strong> as he was between me and the <strong>TV<\/strong> but I could she him getting involved with the action.&nbsp; I remember Grandma would tell him to turn it down so we could sleep and he would and then scoot a bit closer so he could still hear it.&nbsp; After Grandma would go off to bed I could sneak out and go <strong>set<\/strong> with <strong>Grandpa<\/strong> but he would say I had to be quiet so \u201cwe\u201d didn\u2019t get in trouble with Grandma.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">Grandma Jessie<\/strong> had a big tall curio or \u201cknickknack\u201d cabinet in the corner of the \u201c<strong>front<\/strong> room\u201d.&nbsp; In that, I remember there were a <strong>lot<\/strong> of really neat looking things I wanted to play with but she had it locked up so I <strong>couldn<\/strong>\u2019t get to them and break them.&nbsp; I don\u2019t remember what all was in there but just remember they really were fine things and I really wanted to get them out but that was not any part of our <strong>deal<\/strong>.&nbsp; I remember that when we stayed there on a Saturday <strong>night<\/strong>, <strong>Grandpa<\/strong> would be in the \u201c<strong>front<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>front<\/strong>\u201d room watching <strong>TV<\/strong>.&nbsp; He would always have on things like Lawrence Welk, Milton Berle, or some of the westerns of the <strong>time<\/strong>.&nbsp; His most favorite show had to be the Saturday <strong>night<\/strong> fights.&nbsp; I don\u2019t remember much about them but suspect that they were all Phony put on stuff.&nbsp; No <strong>matter<\/strong> he got real interested in them and would talk to the <strong>TV<\/strong> and tell them what he thought.&nbsp; Grandma would sometimes watch a little but she mostly would be in the \u201c<strong>Front<\/strong>-room\u201d <strong>sewing<\/strong> on needle point stuff or back in the bedroom working on her <strong>sewing<\/strong> machine.&nbsp; She had <strong>one<\/strong> of those Singer Treadle machines.&nbsp; That was the most interesting to me.&nbsp; She would even let me pump the peddle some times.&nbsp; She would explain that I need to be \u201csmooth\u201d so she didn\u2019t mess up the <strong>sewing<\/strong>.&nbsp; Not too fast and not too slow, and I had to stop when she said.&nbsp; That would be <strong>fun<\/strong> for a little while then when she <strong>wasn<\/strong>\u2019t in there I would try to treadle that <strong>thing<\/strong> as fast as I could.&nbsp; If she caught me, she would get on to me good and that would be the end of my <strong>sewing<\/strong> for the <strong>night<\/strong> and I would have to go <strong>set<\/strong> with <strong>Grandpa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I remember they had two old clocks in that \u201c<strong>front<\/strong>\u2013<strong>front<\/strong> room\u201d&nbsp; <strong>one<\/strong> was a mantle <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">clock<\/strong> that was electric but had chimes.&nbsp; I have that <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">clock<\/strong> now but the <strong>motor<\/strong> has quit and they are real hard to find parts for.&nbsp; I hope to get it fixed some day as I grew up with that clock.&nbsp; Mom got it when <strong>Grandpa<\/strong> was gone and we had it at our house the whole <strong>time<\/strong> I grew up and that <strong>thing<\/strong> chimed every 15 minutes and then on the hour it counted out the hours so you could tell what <strong>time<\/strong> it was if you woke up\u2026 mostly we got so used to it that we ignored it and never knew it <strong>wasn<\/strong>\u2019t chiming.&nbsp; The other <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">clock<\/strong> was a glass covered <strong>one<\/strong> that had some little gold balls that twisted back and forth.&nbsp; <strong>Grandpa<\/strong> had to wind that <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">clock<\/strong> every <strong>night<\/strong> (I think).&nbsp; It too was <strong>one<\/strong> of those things we were not supposed to touch.<\/p>\n<p>Once, when were there, it must have been fall as Grandma had fresh oranges and they sure were good.&nbsp; She had this neat little tool that she could stick into them and you could suck the juice out, kind of like a straw.&nbsp; I remember her fixing that for me as a treat and it sure was good.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I don\u2019t remember a <strong>lot<\/strong> more about her, although I can see her in my mind but I think some of that may be refreshed by old pictures I have seen of
