As the cruise goes we get earlier every day<\/strong> getting off the ship<\/strong> to meet up on our tour\u2026 something wrong with that scenario\u2026 but yesterday it was 9am\u2026 not bad\u2026 to day<\/strong> it was 8am\u2026 that is ok but it gets worse as we go\u2026 anyway getting off the ship<\/strong> we see the train tour<\/strong> \u2026 they meet the ship<\/strong> at the pier\u2026 we should of done the train\u2026 first anyway but the tour<\/strong> we took was great\u2026 history about the women of Skagway<\/a>\u2026 both good and bad..<\/p>\n

And here come our tour guides\u2026<\/a> <\/p>\n

We had a bus take us to the other end of town\u2026 and started our walk back down the alleys (Paradise, French and Jap-according to a book search I found here<\/a> )and back streets and places you see but have no clue about\u2026 well now we know that they were for, where and how..<\/p>\n

Of course it had to start with a story about how Skagway<\/strong> began and it isn\u2019t all that old\u2026 1897\u2026 <\/p>\n

The town is so cool because they have held the original setting, architecture, etc.\u2026 most of the building<\/strong> are original or required to look that way\u2026 although as you can see they have their own Harley store\u2026 but didn\u2019t see any bikes?   They do have all boardwalks along both sides of the street. <\/p>\n

As the story went the town fathers \u2026 or those of \u201chigh class\u201d didn\u2019t like the Amsterdam method\u2026 of advertising the service in the window\u2026 so they required curtains be put in place\u2026 well of course the working women figured out how to make that work out for them\u2026 it has a curtain like the ordinance required\u2026 and this building<\/strong> was an original Crib\u2026 about a 10 x 10 building<\/strong> for the purpose of \u2026. business.<\/p>\n

As we move through town the guide on the right, explained all sorts of things but at this point we were about to move to the lady that made money by selling pies to the miners for $10 each\u2026 and made enough to build a mansion. unfortunately it burned down and all that was left was the chimney\u2026 in the trees to the left.  Interesting fact is that since they had electricity so early they had very few fires so that is why so many old buildings are still in place.. <\/p>\n

Since they are focused on the past these are ladies cribs that have been donated back to the historic need and put in one<\/strong> of the alleys\u2026 <\/p>\n

We also got some explanation that since housing is limited this is the housing for tour<\/strong> guides\u2026 bunk style beds with shared bathrooms\u2026 pretty limited facilities\u2026 <\/p>\n

The tour<\/strong> ended at the most famous of the houses<\/a>\u2026 it had originally been near the other end of town but when the train came they wanted it close to the train so moved the whole building\u2026 but got it in backwards so just cut off the front and back an swapped them\u2026 so the Madame’s room was in front and usually should have been in the back\u2026 we did get a tour<\/strong> of the upstairs \u201cworking girls rooms\u2019\u2026 This house<\/strong> was also ran by the famous Diamond Lil<\/a> at one<\/strong> point before she moved up to Dawson\u2026 (more on Diamond Lil)<\/a><\/p>\n

The upstairs collection is so that it kept some of the wallpaper that they had and anything that had been left in the building<\/strong> as well as some more recent paintings\u2026 to show the life.<\/p>\n

Since the girls were paid in gold nuggets at times they would (at the end of the 15 minute service) drop them down a special copper tube from their room to a capture container the rattle alerted the bar tender to put their room notice back up as \u201cin service\u201d\u2026 <\/p>\n

The ceiling was where the electric wires went\u2026 not really as safe as today but that is how it worked..<\/p>\n

In the house<\/strong> was this dress, believed to be one<\/strong> of the Madame’s as it has silver lines in it and weights about 10 lbs.\u2026 <\/p>\n

This was a replica room\u2026 10 x 10 with a 3\/4 twin bed and a few things they might have had\u2026 <\/p>\n

Interesting down stairs in the bar\u2026 they have a collection of bed pans\u2026 haven\u2019t seen one<\/strong> of them before\u2026 <\/p>\n

I think these places were probably the real HOOTERS\u2026 way before the current one\u2026  <\/p>\n

Ok, we finished that tour<\/strong> and headed back up the street to visit the yarn shop and junk stores\u2026 luckily we only hit<\/strong> one<\/strong> jewelry store\u2026 <\/p>\n

Amazing that the first bank and only bank in Skagway<\/strong> still has the counter and teller bars\u2026 fun stuff\u2026 and is in the original building<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Yep, had to hit<\/strong> the yarn shop\u2026 saw it on the tour<\/strong> and it was a prime spot to stop\u2026 and she got some yarn\u2026 <\/p>\n

We took in the small museum there and several other things the park service had along the way\u2026 there is a huge park service operations here\u2026 <\/p>\n

Being noon, a long way back to the ship<\/strong> and a rain storm coming we ducked into the Sweet tooth caf\u00e9<\/a> and had sandwiches\u2026 not a bad burger\u2026 not great\u2026<\/p>\n

But there was a warning sign so I wasn’t expecting a gourmet meal\u2026 <\/p>\n

Since it snows so damn much up here and they had the train to White horse in they had this to remove the snow\u2026 huge snow blower\u2026 <\/p>\n

From there we walked back to the ship\u2026 and crashed\u2026 we had put in several miles in the up and back and up and back tour\u2026  We needed a nap before the dinner and show\u2026<\/p>\n
