—West Gulf<\/strong> Division Convention HamCom 2015<\/p>\n

This is the 37th anniversary year<\/strong> for HamCom. Starting in 1978 at the
\nRed Coach Inn, HamCom has continually expanded and, as a consequence,
\nhas had to move from time<\/strong> to time<\/strong>. There were a series of hotel venues
\nin the 1980\u2019s until HamCom found the Arlington Convention Center where
\nthe amateur radio<\/strong> event was the first official meeting at the center.<\/p>\n

At the Arlington Center, the growth of HamCom made the convention one
\nof the major events on the national calendar for the vendors on the
\nsecond weekend of June. Unfortunately as the City of Arlington grew
\nthey had priority to use the Arlington Convention Center for High
\nSchool graduation, which preempted Ham-Com on the second weekend of
\nJune. This caused problems with the vendors trying to juggle a national
\ncalendar. After looking at many venues, logistics at those venues and
\ncosts HamCom moved to the Plano Centre.<\/p>\n

The Plano Centre was a great venue with the room and features HamCom
\nalways wanted. Smaller than the Arlington Center but comfortable and
\naffordable. Eventually, HamCom\u2019s continued growth caused the
\norganizers to seek a larger facility.<\/p>\n

After visiting many venues and talking with their staffs and many
\nConvention and Visitor Bureau groups, it was decided that the time<\/strong> had
\ncome, so the Ham-Com Directors announced the 2015 Ham-Com would be
\nmoving to the Irving Convention Center to help accommodate its
\ncontinual attendance growth and to provide 1st class facilities to
\nexhibitors and visitors.<\/p>\n

With the move to the new facility, the indoor flea market increased
\nfrom 60 tables to more than 140 indoor, air conditioned tables.<\/p>\n

We are all looking forward to a new and much larger facility. There is
\na significant expansion of vendor space and an all indoor flea market
\nwill sure make browsing for that \u201cspecial\u201d item a lot more
\ncomfortable.<\/p>\n

—Dave Sumner, K1ZZ to Speak at ARRL<\/strong> Forum<\/p>\n

The ARRL<\/strong> Forum at HamCom is scheduled for Saturday, June 13 at 11:00 AM<\/strong>
\nin Room 3. Members will be briefed about the latest news and events in
\nthe West Gulf<\/strong> Division by Division Director Woolweaver. In addition,
\nthe annual West Gulf<\/strong> Division Awards will be presented. Did your
\nnominee win? Who will be the Division Ham of the Year? Who will be
\nrecognized for their efforts in support of amateur radio? You will
\nhave to be there to find out.<\/p>\n

A short description of the 2015 state legislative activities of the
\nDivision will be delivered. Learn what happened at this year\u2019s state
\nlegislative sessions in both Oklahoma and Texas.<\/p>\n

The principal speaker at the Forum this year<\/strong> is Dave Sumner, K1ZZ.
\nDave, better known as \u201cMr. Amateur Radio\u201d, is the Chief Executive
\nOfficer and Secretary of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the
\nnational association for Amateur Radio. Sumner is responsible to the
\nARRL<\/strong> Board of Directors for managing the affairs of the league
\nincluding its headquarters staff and official journal, QST. His
\npresentation is entitled, \u201cARRL<\/strong> Today and Tomorrow\u201d.<\/p>\n

First licensed as KN1ZND in 1962 at age 13, Dave has been active in
\nmost phases of Amateur Radio operating with special emphasis on CW
\ncontesting. Active from the first as an ARRL<\/strong> volunteer, he joined the
\nHeadquarters staff in 1968 for the summer, became a part of the
\npermanent staff in 1972, and was named Assistant General Manager four
\nyears later. He was named Secretary and General Manager in 1982, with a
\nchange in title to Executive Vice President in 1985 and the additional
\ntitle of Chief Executive Officer in 2001.<\/p>\n

—Grassroots Lobbying Course<\/p>\n

Immediately following the ARRL<\/strong> Forum in Room 3, a course on Grassroots
\nLobbying will be presented by a representative of the Keelen Group,
\nFrank McCarthy. Frank has had extensive experience in Grassroots
\norganization and training. The Keelen Group is the political action
\nfirm assisting the ARRL<\/strong> in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n

Preregistration ended June 3rd; however, the course is an open course.
\nAnyone can attend. If you ever wanted to be involved in political
\naction to the assist the ARRL<\/strong> or to influence your legislators on other
\nmatters, this is your chance to learn what to do and what not to do from
\na professional.<\/p>\n

—DX Card Checking at the LSDXA booth<\/p>\n

The Lone Start DX Association will be providing DXCC card checking at
\nHamCom. The ARRL<\/strong> Card Checkers will be handling the demand for DXCC,
\nWAS, and VUCC applications. To save time, sort your cards before
\narrival according to online instructions, which are available on the
\nARRL<\/strong> web site. www.arrl.org<\/a><\/p>\n

—Hiram Percy Maxim<\/p>\n

In response to a special request, Hiram Percy Maxim has agreed to
\nattend HamCom again this year<\/strong>. Don\u2019t miss a chance to meet and greet
\nthe founder of the ARRL<\/strong> and the savior of amateur radio<\/strong>. Hiram will
\nstand for photos for those who desire a keepsake of the occasion.<\/p>\n
