{"id":57420,"date":"2015-05-22T22:11:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-23T04:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=57420"},"modified":"2015-05-22T22:11:00","modified_gmt":"2015-05-23T04:11:00","slug":"me-and-the-duck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/blog\/2015\/05\/22\/me-and-the-duck\/","title":{"rendered":"Me and The Duck\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The past few days it has become evident that our squatters, literally, are a nuisance.&#160; Last fall we had two Chinese ducks move in on our pond.&#160; Wasn\u2019t a big <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>problem<\/strong> as they pretty much stayed away but then\u2026. they started to come up to the house\u2026 and <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> of them comes onto the lower <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>porch<\/strong> to either admire himself in the glass <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>door<\/strong> window or try to talk to the duck in the window?&#160; not sure which?&#160; The <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>problem<\/strong> is he leaves his calling cards on the porch\u2026 Well, yesterday I determined; to get it cleaned up\u2026 not so easy as the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Duck<\/strong> POOP stains the concrete\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SAM_2339.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SAM_2339\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SAM_2339\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SAM_2339_thumb.jpg?resize=640%2C481\" width=\"640\" height=\"481\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The red is just good old Oklahoma red mud that easily washes off.&#160; I know this because I used a bit of Simple Green and a brush and it came off but the middle stain is where the big splotch of duck POOP was?&#160; I used a <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>wire<\/strong> brush\u2026 still not removing the duck stain and I have several of these on the lower porch\u2026 never thought I would have wished it was epoxy coated till now\u2026I even used the power washer and it doesn\u2019t touch that stuff\u2026 so I moved chairs and an old rolling table in front of the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>door<\/strong> so that stupid <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Duck<\/strong> can no longer see himself\u2026hope he gets very discouraged about coming up to the house but am sure that will not fix my problem\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>The <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Duck<\/strong> also makes it back over to the neighbors fence to talk to 2 other ducks over there nearly every day\u2026 I have watched this and they will bob and weave and <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>make<\/strong> funny noises to each other but for some reason the ducks on my <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>side<\/strong> won\u2019t go home?&#160; A week ago I notice that <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> of them had a hurt foot and was having a very hard <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>time<\/strong> getting around so I caught it and took it back and told the neighbor about the hurt foot and at the same <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>time<\/strong> the black duck came up to talk so I grabbed him and threw him over the fence figuring that he would stay with the ones that couldn\u2019t leave\u2026 WRONG!\u2026 He immediately that afternoon came back\u2026. That pissed me off.<\/p>\n<p>So yesterday after trying hard to clean the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>porch<\/strong> and my attitude about the ducks going down faster than a hail stone,&#160; I noticed he was heading for the fence\u2026 I thought maybe I can get lucky and grab him again\u2026 well not so lucky this <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>time<\/strong> either\u2026 I ran in and grabbed <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> of the Dog crate&#160; to put along the fence path they had worn , hoping I could guide him in and close the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>door<\/strong> on him\u2026 my plan was to capture, and trim his flight feathers so he can\u2019t get out of their yard anymore\u2026 <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SAM_2335.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SAM_2335\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SAM_2335\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SAM_2335_thumb.jpg?resize=640%2C391\" width=\"640\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had this up against the fence and the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>door<\/strong> open to use as a guide and then tried to move the duck down to it\u2026 well, that duck is smarter than I figured\u2026 He knew that thing was not there the last <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>time<\/strong> down and would not get near it\u2026 I spent over and hour of chasing him back and forth along the fence\u2026 you see my fence (in question) has a lot of cedar trees and bushes along it so you just cant rush up there and grab\u2026 and the duck can fly so in open ground he just takes off\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SAM_2341.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SAM_2341\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SAM_2341\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SAM_2341_thumb.jpg?resize=640%2C481\" width=\"640\" height=\"481\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had the dog crate set in that small open area as I tried to get the duck in to the crate\u2026 no luck and I can\u2019t reach through fast enough to get to the duck\u2026 he made a dash when I missed and then flew back to the pond\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>What next\u2026 a little thought and I figured&#160; I should get a \u201ccatcher\u201d like we had on the farm and maybe get close enough to just grab him by the leg or neck\u2026I went to the farm supply stores and gee, no <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> has them.&#160; What is worse, unless you talk to someone my age, they have no idea what your talking about.&#160; Beyond that you can\u2019t easily find heavy wire&#160; to <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>make<\/strong> the hook from.&#160; I got some at the Mill but that was not near heavy enough or big enough\u2026 it was stiff but I couldn\u2019t get it straight to <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>make<\/strong> the handle and then it occurred to me that the tomato cages were much larger wire\u2026 close to #9\u2026 so I kind of improvised some stuff I had\u2026 and old broken tomato cage cut to get the wire, a 6 ft. hoe handle that the hoe fell off of some <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>time<\/strong> ago, and some pipe clamps\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SAM_2337.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SAM_2337\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SAM_2337\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SAM_2337_thumb.jpg?resize=516%2C687\" width=\"516\" height=\"687\" \/><\/a>    <\/p>\n<p>So I had a \u201cchicken hook\u201d\u2026 I hoped\u2026 my fear is the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>wire<\/strong> wasn\u2019t as big and stiff as I remember, just hoped it would work out\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>Today, there was that stupid duck\u2026 oh and here is the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> in question taken last fall..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_2473.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2473\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IMG_2473\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_2473_thumb.jpg?resize=640%2C481\" width=\"640\" height=\"481\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Damn ugly duck!\u2026 not as ugly as the ones with more white\u2026 and in my watching of this duck after I caught the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> that was hurt\u2026 he thinks he can be friends with the wild geese, the turtles, anything that is in the pond?&#160; <br \/>Had some wild geese fly in yesterday and this duck made a dash to get up close to them\u2026 not threatening like just wanted to be close and when they came up on the damn, so did the duck\u2026 sticking real close but the geese tired of it real quick and left\u2026 oh and back to today\u2026 I noticed him moving toward the house and I stepped out on the deck so he moved off to head to the neighbors fence\u2026 my thought was , \u201cnow I can try the hook\u201d .&#160; Well after standing in the rain for 45 minutes and running back and forth around those big cedars I hadn\u2019t even touched the duck but once and that wasn\u2019t enough to capture\u2026 I finally gave up as it was too damn wet out\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t bother the Duck\u2026.. <\/p>\n<p>He came out 15 minutes or so after I left and once in open ground flew to the pond and swam off to the other side\u2026 I am hoping I may have upset him enough he will move on, but doubt it as he hasn\u2019t been afraid to come back even thought the dogs chase him off every <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>time<\/strong> they see him\u2026 so some <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>time<\/strong> in the next few weeks I will try again and if I fail a few too many times\u2026.
