{"id":5142,"date":"2011-03-03T07:05:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T13:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=5142"},"modified":"2011-03-03T07:05:00","modified_gmt":"2011-03-03T13:05:00","slug":"in-review-of-a-blog-on-the-latest-berkshire-letter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/blog\/2011\/03\/03\/in-review-of-a-blog-on-the-latest-berkshire-letter\/","title":{"rendered":"In review of a blog on the latest Berkshire letter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>While reading the blog of <a href=\"http:\/\/alephblog.com\/2011\/02\/27\/critical-analysis-of-buffetts-annual-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alephblog<\/a>, I came to these quotes from Warren Buffet in his latest <strong>letter<\/strong>.&#160;&#160; It is amazing how straight out these comments can be used to measure other companies.&#160; I know in my own <strong>company<\/strong> the directors are not true owners.&#160; Most have shares but usually not purchased because they thought it was a good investment, but rather because they got them as \u201cOPTIONS\u201d or \u201cGIFTS\u201d.&#160; This has also been expounded on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fool.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Motley Fool<\/a> many times in many of their missives about investing,&#160; \u201c<strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>look<\/strong> for management ownership\u201d.&#160; Correctly stated, when it is your money you play with you take a much more critical view of how it is spent and used.&#160;&#160; Like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daveramsey.com\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Ramsey<\/a> says, about credit cards, it is easy to use them because it does not hurt, <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>cash<\/strong> leaving your hands causes pain. <\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph follows suit in stating they spend little for their corporate offices and indicates they watch very closely the expenses of the very top controllers of the <strong>company<\/strong>.&#160; I wish I could say the same for many other companies.&#160; We get a good story about how to watch the expenses and bottom line but when you <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>look<\/strong> around you find managers with better digs, better \u201c<strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>office<\/strong> equipment\u201d, better cars, perks and so on.&#160; You also find that most of the top managers now make a much higher multiple of the average employee wage than they did just 10 years ago \u2013 you can check out my comments on that <a href=\"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=1468\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=2226\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.&#160;&#160; &#8211; WD0AJG<\/p>\n<p><em>================================================================================================<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To start with, the directors who represent you think and act like owners. They receive token     <br \/>compensation: no options, no restricted stock and, for that matter, virtually no <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>cash<\/strong>. We do not provide them directors and officers liability insurance, a given at almost every other large public <strong>company<\/strong>. If they mess up with your money, they will lose their money as well. Leaving my holdings aside, directors and their families own Berkshire shares worth more than $3 billion. Our directors, therefore, <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>monitor<\/strong> Berkshire\u2019s actions and results with keen interest and an owner\u2019s eye. You and I are lucky to have them as stewards.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>     <br \/>This same owner-orientation prevails among our managers. In many cases, these are people who have sought out Berkshire as an acquirer for a business that they and their families have long owned. They came to us with an owner\u2019s mindset, and we provide an environment that encourages them to retain it. Having managers who love their businesses is no small advantage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> <em>   <\/p>\n<p>Cultures self-propagate. Winston Churchill once said, \u201cYou shape your houses and then they shape      <br \/>you.\u201d That wisdom applies to businesses as well. Bureaucratic procedures beget more bureaucracy, and imperial corporate palaces induce imperious behavior. (As one wag put it, \u201cYou know you\u2019re no longer CEO when you get in the back seat of your car and it doesn\u2019t move.\u201d) At Berkshire\u2019s \u201cWorld Headquarters\u201d our annual rent is $270,212. Moreover, the home-office investment in furniture, art, Coke dispenser, lunch room, high-tech equipment \u2013 you name it \u2013 totals $301,363.
