When we moved in I put out several &#8220;bluebird&#8221; boxes and immediately had numerous young blue <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">birds<\/strong> around the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">house<\/strong> all summer. Last summer it was even better as we had at least two sets with young and <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> had two hatches&#8230; This spring has been different. One nest box was attacked by Sparrows and <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> of the Blue <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">birds<\/strong> killed. Two other nest boxes were staked out and &#8220;owned&#8221; by <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">sparrows<\/strong>. the first Bluebird box had a next as we watched the activity waiting and then <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> morning I found the door pulled open and the next empty? not sure what got that <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> but expect it might have been a cat or <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">something<\/strong> of that nature&#8230; <br \/>We have also put up two Purple Martin houses and have , just this year seen at least some interest by martins to build in <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> but again the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">sparrows<\/strong> have claimed the houses and are aggressive enough to keep them away from them for the most part. The martins have gained a foot hold on <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">house<\/strong> so we hope for the best there&#8230;<br \/>We also lost all the baby geese to predators this spring. The geese pair has 5 young the first time we say them , then two a few days later and late <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">last<\/strong> weekend, they were all gone&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Well, I can&#8217;t control all the predators but I can do <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">something<\/strong> about the sparrow population. To that end I have invested in this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/homepic.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"homepic\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"homepic\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/homepic_thumb.jpg?resize=398%2C255\" width=\"398\" height=\"255\"><\/a><br \/>I got it from : <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparrowtrap.net\/\">Sparrow TRap ne<\/a>t<\/p>\n<p>We put it out over a week ago and it took days to catch the first sparrow. I used all kinds of bait and old nest material, etc&#8230; but finally <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">last<\/strong> Tuesday we got the first <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> (after I had used some old dry bread for bait) then another the next <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">day<\/strong> and now we have 5 in the trap&#8230; jokingly I told my family we needed to mark the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">birds<\/strong> so we can take out the older ones as captivity may wear on them too much&#8230; but at least I have reduced the &#8220;free&#8221; population by 5 as of today and hope for many more so the &#8220;good&#8221; <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">birds<\/strong> can have less competition for nest spots. I knew as a kid that my uncle would pay me a nickle each to shot them with my BB gun&#8230; a small fortune for me and I spent hours stalking them wily little devils&#8230; he paid until I found I could more easily get them at <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">night<\/strong> in the cedar trees at his <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">house<\/strong> where they were roosting in a big flock&#8230; made good money <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> night! but we did eliminate plenty of them that night&#8230;.
