Have you ever had those days or even short moments of thought where something<\/strong> from the past just “BAME” hits your thoughts. \u00a0I mean something<\/strong> that was not really all that significant but “BOOM” it is there and your kind of immersed in it for the moment. \u00a0In fact can’t get rid of it once it gets stuck in there.<\/p>\n

That happened today as I was working on something<\/strong> totally unrelated, that thought just “POW” was there and I couldn’t get rid of it. \u00a0I had to do an internet search to find the origin of the words from the song “MELLOW<\/strong> YELLOW”. \u00a0Crap, Now I can’t get the damn song out of my mind. It was real popular for a little while way back when, \u00a0but the artist really never made much else. \u00a0Anyway here is the wiki on it – strange stuff and I remember hearing all those rumors about dried bananas, but oh well…<\/p>\n

“Mellow Yellow<\/strong>” is a song and single release by\u00a0Donovan<\/a>. It reached #2 on the Billboard charts in the U.S. in\u00a01966<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The song was rumored to be about smoking dried banana skins, which was\u00a0believed to be a hallucinogenic drug<\/a> in the 1960s, but this rumor has since been debunked. According to Donovan’s notes accompanying the album\u00a0Donovan’s Greatest Hits<\/a><\/em>, the rumor that one<\/strong> could get high from smoking dried banana skins was started by\u00a0Country Joe McDonald<\/a> in 1966, and Donovan heard the rumor three weeks before “Mellow Yellow” was released as a single. (According to\u00a0The\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/a> Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll<\/em>, he admitted later the song made reference to a\u00a0vibrator<\/a>[citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup>; an “electrical banana” as mentioned in the lyrics.) The phrase “mellow yellow” appears on page 719 of the first American edition of James Joyce’s\u00a0Ulysses<\/a><\/em>, where it is used to refer to Mrs. Marion Bloom’s buttocks, but it is not known if Donovan got the phrase from there.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The record had a “Beatlesque<\/a>” feel to it, and was sometimes mistaken for a\u00a0Beatles<\/a> song. Donovan, in fact, was friends with the Beatles.Paul McCartney<\/a> can be heard as one<\/strong> of the background revelers on this track \u2014 but contrary to popular belief, it is not McCartney whispering the “quite rightly” answering lines in the chorus, but rather Donovan himself. Donovan had a small part in coming up with the lyrics for “Yellow Submarine<\/a>” and\u00a0Paul McCartney<\/a> played\u00a0bass guitar<\/a> (uncredited) on portions of Donovan’s\u00a0Mellow Yellow<\/em><\/a> album.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

R&B<\/a> and\u00a0jazz<\/a> singer\u00a0Georgie Fame<\/a> recorded his own version with a distinctively different arrangement reminiscent of the\u00a0Count Basie<\/a>orchestra.<\/p>\n

Cadbury<\/a> used a modified version of the song to promote their\u00a0Caramello Koala<\/a> chocolates (“They call<\/strong> me Caramello… Koala”).<\/p>\n

The song was also used in a series of television commercials to promote the use of butter.<\/p>\n

In France,\u00a0Lipton<\/a> used a modified version of the song to promote their tea (“They call<\/strong> me Lipton Yellow”).<\/p>\n

In 1999, “Mellow Yellow” was sung by a group of young adults \u2014 among which were then-unknowns\u00a0Alex Greenwald<\/a>,\u00a0Rashida Jones<\/a> andJason Thompson<\/a> \u2014 in\u00a0Gap’s<\/a> “Everybody in\u00a0Cords<\/a>” commercial directed by Pedro Romhanyi. The music<\/strong> mix was done by the\u00a0Dust Brothers<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Chart positions were #2\u00a0(USA)<\/small> and #8\u00a0(UK)<\/small>.<\/p>\n

One of the oldest\u00a0coffeeshops<\/a> in\u00a0Amsterdam<\/a> is called “Mellow Yellow”.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

In Episode 17 of the 5th Season of\u00a0Scrubs<\/a><\/em>, JD figures out the song is about\u00a0liver disease<\/a> (not quite rightly).<\/p>\n

Jimi Hendrix<\/a> made a reference to this song in his song\u00a0Bold As Love<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Frank Zappa<\/a> referenced the song in his number\u00a0“Absolutely Free”<\/em> on the album\u00a0We’re Only In It For The Money<\/a> (1967)<\/em>.<\/p>\n
