{"id":3906,"date":"2010-12-15T11:36:01","date_gmt":"2010-12-15T17:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=3906"},"modified":"2018-11-12T02:43:18","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T02:43:18","slug":"cruise-the-eastern-carribbean-day-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/blog\/2010\/12\/15\/cruise-the-eastern-carribbean-day-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Cruise the Eastern Caribbean &#8211; day 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>12-10-2010 \u2013 St. Kitts<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/StKitts02.gif\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"StKitts02\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"StKitts02\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/StKitts02_thumb.gif?resize=573%2C507\" width=\"573\" height=\"507\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today was a later start, sounds like a broken record huh?, as the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">tour<\/strong> on the \u201cSt Kitts Railroad\u201d did not leave until 10 AM.&nbsp;&nbsp; I did however get up in time to watch us come into port \u2013 There were several birds flying with the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">ship<\/strong> trying to catch some of the flying fish as we scared them off but I didn\u2019t\u2019 get any pictures of that \u2013 wish I had.&nbsp; As normal for me, sleeping more than 6 hours is way too hard as my back is really sore by then and the pills have worn off.<\/p>\n<p>We were up, and had breakfast then back and got ready for the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">tour<\/strong> ride.&nbsp; We headed up the pier and they took us in groups to the buses waiting for us (6 buses in all for the 10 <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">AM<\/strong> departure).&nbsp; What was good about this trip was the fact of the 12 mile <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">bus<\/strong> ride and tour.&nbsp; Or driver, Eddie, was really good and told us more history and important parts about the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">island<\/strong> than the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong> guide did.&nbsp;&nbsp; On St. Kitts there are about 40,000 <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">people<\/strong> but 80,000 monkeys.&nbsp; He guessed that at some point it would become a famous bar-b-que place for monkey? He claimed to have never eaten any and had been offered once and turned it down.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie pointed out this &#8220;one of a kind&#8221; St Kitts &#8220;happy tree&#8221;.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2418.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2418\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IMG_2418\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2418_thumb.jpg?resize=488%2C367\" width=\"488\" height=\"367\"><\/a>[\/caption]<\/p>\n<p>They also have a lot of old churches, everywhere.&nbsp; Some date back into the 1600 and 1700.&nbsp; This <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> lost its\u2019 steeple and bell in an earthquake in the late 1700\u2019s and still stands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This Church as stood for well over 200 years and maybe close to 300&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2419.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2419\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IMG_2419\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2419_thumb.jpg?resize=481%2C362\" width=\"481\" height=\"362\"><\/a>[\/caption]<\/p>\n<p>One of the churches along the train ride &#8211; this one is also about 200 years old.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>]<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2482.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2482\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IMG_2482\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2482_thumb.jpg?resize=463%2C348\" width=\"463\" height=\"348\"><\/a>[\/caption]<\/p>\n<p>He also said they had conveniently put the largest cemetery next to the largest Hospital in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/ipa\/A0107930.html\" target=\"_blank\">Basseterre<\/a>.&nbsp; It was called an underground hotel that <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">people<\/strong> check in but never check out and they put big cement covers on the rooms to make sure no <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> checks out.<\/p>\n<p>We also learned that there is an American built set of schools for medical doctors and veterinarians \u2013 \u201cThe Ross University\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Getting good pictures from a moving bus is difficult. This is the entrance to the Ross School of medicine.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2411.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2411\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IMG_2411\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2411_thumb.jpg?resize=472%2C355\" width=\"472\" height=\"355\"><\/a>[\/caption]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A ways down the road from the School of medicine is the School for Veterinary<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;]<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2412.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2412\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IMG_2412\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2412_thumb.jpg?resize=454%2C342\" width=\"454\" height=\"342\"><\/a>[\/caption]<\/p>\n<p>When we got to the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong> after a 12 mile <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">bus<\/strong> <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">tour<\/strong> of the villages on the south <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">side<\/strong> of St Kitts.&nbsp; This <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">bus<\/strong> <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">tour<\/strong> passed the road to the \u201cBrimstone Hill Fortress\u201d (see map above) .&nbsp; The fort was started in the 1500 and never truly completed.&nbsp; They built on it for over 100 years in the first go and then quit when the truce was signed making all of St. Kitts a British <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">island<\/strong>. Before that the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">island<\/strong> was split French and British.&nbsp; Once at the \u201cend of the tracks\u201d (only about a mile past the fortress road) we off-loaded the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">bus<\/strong> and loaded on the train.&nbsp; There was plenty of room and <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> could set in the lower or upper seating, upper was open air and lower enclosed.&nbsp; We selected the top to get better views.<\/p>\n<p>St. Kitts &#8220;Sugar Train&#8221;. At the end of the tracks where we loaded.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2422.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2422\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IMG_2422\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2422_thumb.jpg?resize=556%2C418\" width=\"556\" height=\"418\"><\/a>[\/caption]<\/p>\n<p>The <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong> runs the rest of the way around the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">island<\/strong> as does the road but the Train is a bit more scenic.&nbsp;&nbsp; At first I was thinking the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong> ride would be a problem as it was really squealing and squawking when we started out but it quit after a mile or so.&nbsp; The brakes on that <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong> really make a noise.&nbsp; The good thing on the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong> is they serve you all the beverage you can hold, including rum punch and pina-colada.&nbsp; Of course I had to have <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> but just <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> as I wanted to be able to get off the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong> and not be poured off.&nbsp; One farm on the north <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">side<\/strong> is now an Inn \u201cOttley\u2019s Plantation Inn\u201d.&nbsp; There is a new horse-race track on the far NW <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">side<\/strong> of the island, although I didn\u2019t see many horses.&nbsp; We did see a lot of goats and pigs and dogs and kids running to wave at the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Open range goats and sheep of St Kitts.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2488.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2488\" style=\"border-top: 0px; The tracks end at the international air port where we off-load the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">train<\/strong> and re-enter the <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">bus<\/strong> for the short trip back to the docks.<\/p>\n<p>Old engines wasting, in the background is the International Airport.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5128.temp.domains\/~ishmaels\/blog3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2579.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2579\" style=\"border-top: 0px; When we reached the shopping area of the docks he explained about the a guys with monkeys that would get your picture taken with them (for a price) and to make sure you ask about the price first.<\/p>\n<p>Of course we did some shopping and found some t-shirts and some other small things that we \u201cjust couldn\u2019t live without\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp; At 5pm the neighbor <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">ship<\/strong> was pulling out and I got some pictures of that.&nbsp; Funny how when they blew their horn to leave port there was a rush of <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">people<\/strong> from the shops racing to our ship, most with &#8220;do-do&#8221; in their pants&#8230; that was funny in the lower left you can see there was almost no <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">one<\/strong> on the dock but with in 10 minutes it was full of <strong class=\"StrictlyAutoTagBold\">people<\/strong> rushing to our ship&#8230; Again a very good show well done.&nbsp; We then went to dinner the crew again sang to the crowd.&nbsp; I would guess they do that at 9 or 9:30 nearly every night?&nbsp; We have only been there twice that late.&nbsp;&nbsp; I did however get up in time to watch us come into port \u2013 There were several birds flying with the ship trying to catch some of the flying fish as we scared them off but I didn\u2019t\u2019 get any pictures of that \u2013 wish I had.&nbsp; As normal for me, sleeping more than 6 hours is way too hard as my back is really sore by then and the pills have worn off.
