Well It is that day<\/strong> , again, I am headed home and wrote this up before I left. \u00a0This is Rotation (home) number 110 +\/-. \u00a0I didn’t actually keep count of all those trips home or trips over here for that matter. \u00a0 Although it has been 3096 days since I started this “rotation job”, a job I told them I would try for a few months to see if I liked it. \u00a0Well, I didn’t like it but the alterantives were much worse so I kept it. \u00a0I like the time<\/strong> off, it is almost like being half retired? \u00a0The problem is when you work it is more than full time, they actually see to it you make<\/strong> up for the time<\/strong> off. \u00a0 \u00a0Anyway, I am out today on a very long day<\/strong> trip home. \u00a0Since I wrote this all up once before – why do it again… – HA!… This is my day<\/strong> of travel today…..with small corrections. \u00a0Go check<\/strong> out the orignal<\/a> to see what has changed.<\/p>\n

I wrote this in preparation for my “extra-long” day<\/strong> trip home. \u00a0Here is a brief outline of what happens on this day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I get up (remember this is in a time<\/strong> zone 7 hours in front of Central Time in the US – no more daylight saving for you guys) at 4:00AM<\/p>\n

I do this to catch a bus to the airport at 4:45AM.<\/p>\n

That bus has to travel about 10km to the airport. \u00a0It is dark and we have many things to go through yet today.<\/p>\n

We pass<\/strong> through the first of a series of “security ” checks. \u00a0These are questionable checks but they do them anyway. \u00a0I think mostly they want to make<\/strong> sure your not brining in or taking anything out that you have not paid tax on. \u00a0 The first check<\/strong> is the x-ray machine at the entrance to the airport, bags are run through and you have to step through the metal detector. \u00a0It almost always beeps so you get the obligitory “pat-down”.<\/p>\n

Now we, as there are several of us usually, head to the check<\/strong> in counter but first – all luggage must be checked again, this time<\/strong> against the “declaration” sheet that you had to fill out when you came in the country – you must take out all that you declared coming in with, or pay more tax – to the tune of more than the time<\/strong> was worth. \u00a0 One thing<\/strong> they are now more interested in is the fact – did you declare “cash” on that sheet and they always want to see your wallet. \u00a0IF you hae case you did not delcare – they declare it. \u00a0If you do not have the cash you declared coming in, they want to know why so they declare the tax on something you may have bought? \u00a0I try not to have any cash in my wallet and I never carry my wallet it is tucked in the backpack in a pocket. \u00a0After you get checked out and your bag is generally ransacked(sure hope you didnt have it packed for any particular purpose as ilt iwll be a mess now but most of us do not care – “WE ARE GOING HOME!” – \u00a0you can now move back to another line<\/strong> to actually move up to get our boarding pass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We move to the check-in counter to get a boarding pass, check<\/strong> any luggage, ensure we do not have a laptop battery – in the laptop, etc.<\/p>\n

After they check<\/strong> you name on the “manifest” list, you get your boarding pass, the “exit card” etc. \u00a0We take that card and go to a setting area outside the “international” departure lounge. \u00a0AT this point you try to fill in the card as quick as possible cause the flys are so think you can’t write and swat at the same time<\/strong>. \u00a0Fill in the exit card with all pertinent data from our passport and work visa, etc… once they open that check<\/strong> in line<\/strong> you get in that line<\/strong> , again, to have all your paperwork checked , again.<\/p>\n

Here they check<\/strong> the exit card with the passport, and visa and make<\/strong> sure all is valid and that you got your boarding pass<\/strong> from the boarding clerk. \u00a0After they fill in the back of the “exit card” they stamp all three, passport, boarding pass<\/strong> and card. \u00a0Here if they do not like the way you wrote the card they will take extra PAINS, mostly yours, in re-writing the card while you and the crowd behind wait. \u00a0This may take 3 to 10 minutes depending on what they feel like. \u00a0Once you get those stamps, you have to make<\/strong> sure you got one<\/strong> in the passport and one<\/strong> on the boarding pass<\/strong> and keep them together or you will hold up the line<\/strong> again while they try to find your match stamps. \u00a0Then you can move to the next x-ray machine and metal detector.<\/p>\n

Put your carry-on bags on the belt, walk through the metal detector and give them the declaration paper (copy from when you came in a month ago) and they double check<\/strong> to make<\/strong> sure you don’t have a laptop that has the battery in it, if so they take the battery and maybe you will get it back on the plane.<\/p>\n

If you have passed this check<\/strong> you then get to go into one<\/strong> of the “Two” exit lounges for international flights… and wait for your flight<\/strong> to be ready. \u00a0We have to be here 2 hours early to make<\/strong> sure everyone gets through the checks. \u00a0When they are ready to board, \u00a0a customs security and a state police officer will be at the door along with the ticket agent. \u00a0the ticket agent takes the first of two stubs, the police will check<\/strong> to make<\/strong> sure the remaining ticket has a stamp that matches the stamp in your passport, better not swap pages or you will hold up the line<\/strong> and garner the rath of all while he finds the matching stamps. \u00a0from there you walk out to a bus.<\/p>\n

There are no seats on the bus, only hand holds and if you get shoved to the back you will be last off… you wait for all to get on the bus and the ticket agent, the security people etc. to get on as well. \u00a0the bus lurches and chugs and squawks out along the tarmac to the waiting plane. \u00a0ONce there you wait for all the security to come from ??? somewhere else to do one<\/strong> more check<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As you exit that bus the security or ? takes your second stub from your boarding pass<\/strong> and if you had checked baggage you have to go pick it up off the ground and put it on a cart to be loaded in the plane. \u00a0This is also an interesting situation as you have turned your checked bag over \u00a0to them. \u00a0It has the tag for where your going, it is loaded on a cart at the terminal and brought out to the plane and unloaded from the cart and put on the ground. \u00a0Some people forget to pick up their bag and they will hold up the plane while they demand “who forgot to pick up your checked bag” \u00a0someone \u00a0will remember and race of \u00a0the plane to put on the cart so the crew that brought it out, unloaded it on the ground can then take it over and put it in the luggage hold of the plane. \u00a0Whew, what a way to run things. \u00a0We know they have the bar code scanners but I guess they do not trust them or you or something?<\/p>\n

You then go to another spot so your bags can be ransacked one<\/strong> more time<\/strong> and make<\/strong> sure you didn’t put something in there that we have no clue where it could have come from but they think it could be there… once you secure you carry on, you then go to a ‘hand-pat-down” to ensure you don’t have something hidden on your person, again I have no clue what it could have been as I have been checked 4 times already. \u00a0Then you can get on the plane.<\/p>\n

Once on the plane it is generally a normal flight, they do serve food, if you can stomach to eat it or dare to eat it, no radio no music, no video so you are only your own to Nap… which is possible on this short 3 hour flight<\/strong> as there are very few people – usually less than 50 on a plane for 150…<\/p>\n

I need to insert here that they feed us on these flights. \u00a0You that read this should never complain about airline food until you have tried some of this. \u00a0The general airline food is quality compared to some of this stuff. \u00a0One trip I remember from another Africa \u00a0country we got a “bread and butter” \u00a0sandwich with a glass of water or juice. \u00a0The water came from a bottle but not sure where they filled it and the butter was “ripe”.<\/p>\n

When I hit the Paris airport we get off through a normal gangway, come out and have our passport checked to get out to our checked luggage or out of the secured area, then it is a rush from there to the other side of the airport to get in line<\/strong> to get a boarding pass<\/strong> for the flight<\/strong> to the US.<\/p>\n

Here they always look at the ticket, and are quizzed why it is from Paris to US and back? \u00a0asking questions like where in france I live, what I do, etc… once I have assured them that I am not living in France illegally and have come from Africa – then you move from the question crew to the boarding pass<\/strong> desk, get the pass, and head to – you guessed – another security check<\/strong> line<\/strong>. \u00a0sometimes this one<\/strong> has a hundred people in it you weave and weave and then – get your passport checked and stamped, again and then you have to empty every thing<\/strong> out , again, so you can put your checked bag, shoes, belt, etc. on the x-ray\u00a0bet and walk through the metal detector… about 1\/3 of the time<\/strong> the little metal in my ankle sets it off and I have to get a “magic wand” check<\/strong> and a pat down.<\/p>\n

Now you gather your stuff and hope you got it all, put it all back on or in the bag and head to the boarding gate. \u00a0in Paris it is crowed, hot, smelly, wonderful place to be. \u00a0wait, wait, wait then they call for first and then by boarding level but usually it is a rush and there is no privileged or “frequent flyer” selection other than be first in line<\/strong>. \u00a0 This time<\/strong> you get on a plane that is usually full to the brim and so cramped you can’t move for a really nice 9 hour flight<\/strong> with all those nice people . \u00a0Why do so many people not shower before they get on these planes, they all know it is going to be cramped and what is up with no\u00a0deodorant?<\/p>\n

Of course they serve \u00a0that world famous chef prepared meals, chicken or beef? \u00a0and come by about every hour to ensure you don’t fall asleep and if you do they bang you with a cart, if you choose isle seating, this to ensure your enjoying the flight<\/strong>. \u00a0They show movies that you can’t see on the screen way up there and behind all those heads, and usually the audio on one<\/strong> seat or the other does not work properly.<\/p>\n

Some how you get through all this (remember this is usually over 9 hours of constant hum, whine, and if small kids, crying, yelling, and banging. \u00a0 When we land in the US we usually have to wait for someone to move so we can get to our gate and depending on which airport you arrive at the “trek” to the immigration hall is long. \u00a0You rush, you run, you jog in hopes to get in to the Passport control line<\/strong> as quickly as possible because the last to be there on your flight<\/strong> will be waiting a long time<\/strong> for their turn to explain where you came from, what you do there, etc. \u00a0but you do get through unless some idiot got in front of you that was to be in the “VISITOR” lines or can’t find all their paperwork, or something.. There are always some that seem to be totally ignorant of where they are and what they are to do next , even with all the signs.<\/p>\n

Leave this, grab the checked bag, if any, and head to customs for anything to declare – then out and recheck your checked bag and off to the next terminal to catch the next connecting flight<\/strong>. \u00a0This, in some cases causes a similar situation that you have to go out of the secure area and then check<\/strong> back into the secure area and go through the -“take all your stuff out, empty pockets, belt off, shoes off, put them all in the x-ray machine and walk through the metal detector or new full body scan, grab all your stuff again and try to make<\/strong> sure you have it all and start putting on shoes, belt, etc. \u00a0Remember by now I have been up for over 24 hours so my memory is dysfunctional and I am just lucky to usually grab all the right stuff, mine, and get it back in place. \u00a0 From here you start looking at the monitors to see if your outbound flight<\/strong> has changed, usually late in the day<\/strong> the gates start changing and you may be in the opposite end of the place from where you need to be…<\/p>\n

Move to the final gate and try not to fall asleep or you will miss the flight… get on that flight<\/strong> and put in another 2 hours or so getting to your final destination – by air.<\/p>\n

There are a series of fascinating delays I can describe about these flights like being on a commuter (think small) plane for over 6 hours (for a less than 2 hour flight) flying from Atlanta, circle over Muscogee, fly back to Little Rock and refuel then back out and circle then get into OKC. \u00a0Or the time<\/strong> I got on the plane in Paris and we didn’t move more than 100 ft for over 4 hours (something about they didn’t load the fuel properly, the pumps they had would not equalize the tanks, the pump they brought out would not unload-only load and they kept trying to get it just right by moving back and forth, etc but no one<\/strong> can get off. \u00a0Or setting on the plan in London that was a substitute plane and was already one<\/strong> hour late and watching two guys argue and scream at each other while they checked the luggage “one<\/strong> bag at a time” to ensure the luggage on the plane matched the passengers, even though the next flight<\/strong> was going to the same spot and would leave at the same time<\/strong> we would or within a few minutes. \u00a0The reloading took almost 2 hours and I missed my final connection and spent two days in a hotel room trying to get another connection to my destination.<\/p>\n

I think I have said it before, that air travel is just not fun anymore. \u00a0 I have been doing this for almost 20 years of my 29 working for this company. \u00a0We still fly “last class” – you know the cheapest ticket available, cheaper than the discounted tours. \u00a0We are expected to travel on our time<\/strong> not company time<\/strong>. \u00a0Some day<\/strong> it will all be over or I will? \u00a0 – WD0AJG<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
