From my most recent reading bag\u2026 I am sure you have seen the commercials now about the goofy lady posting she is on her way to ???? and some masked criminal comes back,\u201dhave a good time\u201d\u2026 or something to that effect\u2026 well this goes on with that and how easy it is getting for theives to gather m ore and more about us and how hard it is for us to protect our selves from them\u2026 I think we all need<\/strong> to read up a bit and be more worried about what we post<\/strong> out here\u2026I\u00a0think I need<\/strong> to review more seriously what I post<\/strong> and how\u2026probably need<\/strong> more email<\/strong> masks , etc.\u2026 but just ensure I don\u2019t give out more info that I positively\u00a0minimum have to\u2026 that said from a recent illicit credit card fraud use<\/strong> victim\u2026 yes, someone else unknown to me tried to spend a lot of my money at Wal-Mart.com\u2026 caught it pretty quick because I check my accounts regularly but could of gone on until I got the\u00a0monthly statement?<\/p>\n

Pushing users toward a universal sign-in<\/h4>\n

Privacy advocates have also voiced concerns about the use<\/strong> of social networks. Currently, over a billion people have Facebook<\/strong> accounts. More and more sites now allow you to sign<\/strong> in with your Facebook<\/strong> credentials. That\u2019s just an extraordinarily bad idea for two reasons (and there are undoubtedly more).<\/p>\n

First, you\u2019re using one<\/strong> username and password on potentially hundreds of sites. That could dramatically increase the odds of giving cyber criminals access to your various accounts. It\u2019s especially dangerous if you use<\/strong> the same password for both Facebook<\/strong> and your online banking. (The top three rules of passwords are: make them complex, use<\/strong> a unique password for each account, and put a good password manager on your digital devices.)<\/p>\n

The second problem with using Facebook<\/strong> credentials as your \u201cglobal\u201d sign-in is a bit murkier. This \u201cconvenience\u201d gives Facebook<\/strong> more information<\/strong> about sites you regularly visit; it might also provide those sites with some basic data about your Facebook<\/strong> account. Also, it can be difficult to keep track of which sites you\u2019ve linked to your Facebook<\/strong> account. Facebook<\/strong> tools let you restrict third-party access, on a case-by-case basis, but this shouldn\u2019t be considered an absolute solution. (If you\u2019d like to know some of what you\u2019re sharing outside of Facebook, try the online site<\/a>, \u201cI shared what?\u201d [JavaScript required.] You\u2019ll probably be surprised by what\u2019s revealed.) Locking down your social-network account<\/h4>\n

The first rule of social networking: If you don\u2019t want information<\/strong> about yourself to appear all over the Web, don\u2019t put it on a social network. Even your private one-on-one<\/strong> chats with friends and family can be leaked via software glitches, loose privacy settings, or even malicious scripts. Keep in mind that social networks are simply massive databases containing their users\u2019 thoughts, activities, pictures, private messages, location, and more. This information<\/strong> is mined for targeted advertisements and other uses.<\/p>\n

Moreover, your information<\/strong> can be shared without your knowledge. Another user can tag you in a photo or include you in a location-based update.<\/p>\n

Most of us choose to remain on social networks such as Facebook<\/strong> and Google+. It\u2019s become the standard venue for keeping in touch with far-flung friends and family. But it\u2019s in your best interests to carefully manage what\u2019s viewed and by whom. Start with the aforementioned \u201cI shared what?\u201d site<\/a>. Next, regularly review your current privacy settings. Social sites are notorious about changing their policies with little or no notice. Again, consider carefully what you post<\/strong>. If you don\u2019t want the world to see it, don\u2019t put it up on your social-networking<\/strong> page<\/strong>. And don\u2019t accept \u201cFriend\u201d invitations from anyone you don\u2019t trust. Pumping up your friend count might be good for the ego, but it can compromise your privacy.<\/p>\n
