{"id":14165,"date":"2013-06-25T21:38:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-26T03:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=14165"},"modified":"2013-06-25T21:38:00","modified_gmt":"2013-06-26T03:38:00","slug":"is-this-a-problem-or-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/blog\/2013\/06\/25\/is-this-a-problem-or-not\/","title":{"rendered":"Is this a problem or not?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They couldn\u2019t pass a farm bill because they wanted to cut the Food Stamp program \u2026 so I decided to look at some numbers and unless you are fully adept at reading gibberish in the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>government<\/strong> records it was difficult at best\u2026I really wanted to know how much of a cut that huge number of 20 billion would be\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>SO\u2026 I just goggled it up and found others reports that the current <a href=\"http:\/\/mercatus.org\/publication\/cbo-scoring-farm-bills-vs-actual-costs\">proposed farm bill appears to be about 1 Trillion<\/a> dollars estimated over 10 years\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>? wow that is a huge number to start with\u2026 next\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>I see that there was a proposed cut of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/21\/us\/politics\/house-defeats-a-farm-bill-with-big-food-stamp-cuts.html?pagewanted=2\">20 billion from the food stamp program<\/a>\u2026 ok\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>from the last farm bill passed<strong><u> the food stamp program was 66% of the farm bill<\/u><\/strong>\u2026 <font color=\"#ff0000\">SHIT <\/font>2\/3 of the farm bill is not even going to farmers?&#160; not even paying for real farm needs? see below notes from the 2008 farm bill.&#160;&#160; back to the topic at hand\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>At 66% (assuming the same breakdown as 2008) for food stamps,&#160; that would be 66% of 998 billion\u2026 or about 659 billion in food stamps and then cut by 20 billion or about<font color=\"#ff0000\"> 3%<\/font><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of us have suffered more than a 3% cut in our incomes, retirements, or costs in just the past year or two?&#160; At this point I think the<font color=\"#ff0000\"><strong><em> idiots in Washington<\/em><\/strong><\/font> can\u2019t see the forest for the trees? or they are too busy making deals to keep their jobs rather than take care of the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>people<\/strong> that sent them up there\u2026 <strong>oh wait<\/strong>\u2026 I guess they are taking care of the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>people<\/strong> that sent them up there as we now have almost 47% of the population not paying taxes and <a href=\"http:\/\/cnsnews.com\/blog\/joe-schoffstall\/record-number-households-food-stamps-1-out-every-5\">seems that there is now 1 out of 5 households<\/a> on <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>food<\/strong> stamps or in the programs?<\/p>\n<p>No let me top all that with, I found that so far the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>government<\/strong> has run about 30% low on estimates for the costs of these bills\u2026? (see chart below from the first linked article). <\/p>\n<p>I used to work in the USDA\u2026 and <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> of my pet peeves was that too many \u201cfarmers\u201d were \u201cfarming the programs\u201d but the whole <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>thing<\/strong> has become a circus in Washington.&#160; I understand that the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>food<\/strong> stamps were tied to the farm bill years ago to <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>help<\/strong> get the actual farm bill accepted by the \u201cnon-farm\u201d politicians, but maybe the time has come to let it stand on it\u2019s own?&#160; I for <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> think we now have too many give-away programs (<strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>food<\/strong> stamps, welfare, etc.) Why should <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>people<\/strong> want or need to work when they can get a free ride for not working\u2026 ? Some things don\u2019t need to be examined to know what kind of an effect they will have on consumer psyches, spending habits, and ultimately aggregate demand. According to the USDA, there are more than 47 million Americans on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, more commonly known as food stamps. Since the end of the depression in June 2009, food stamp assistance has accelerated by 30.8 percent, dwarfing job creation of 3.8 percent during the same period. This said, it should come as no surprise grocery and health and wellness in aggregate make up about 66 percent of Wal-Mart\u2019s revenues.
