”\u00a0If you’re a user of the social-media website Twitter, you may want to check<\/strong> your account status\u2026\u00a0Wired\u00a0<\/em>magazine reports that the service just discovered a “live hack.” Twitter shut down the hack<\/strong> “moments later.” But the attacker had already made off with the private data of 250,000 users.\u00a0<\/em>This includes usernames, e-mail<\/strong> addresses, and passwords. Twitter believes other companies are victims of the same attack. It’s a situation similar to the\u00a0Subway restaurants’ credit-card hacking<\/span><\/a>\u00a0we noted only last<\/strong> week.<\/p>\n

In recent days, the\u00a0Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0New York Times\u00a0<\/em>newspapers have been hacked, too. Thieves stole the passwords of every single\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0employee, then accessed 53 employees’ personal computers. The\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0believes China-based hackers used a sophisticated “spear-phishing” attack to breach their safeguards.”<\/p>\n

The report goes on to describe the problem…<\/p>\n

“Spear-phishing attacks target individuals through their e-mail<\/strong> accounts. One click on an innocuous-looking e-mail<\/strong> downloads remote access tools (RATs) onto the victim’s computer<\/strong>. The attacker uses the RATs to steal passwords, documents, screenshots\u2026 and even eavesdrop through the computer’s microphone and webcam. It all goes on without the victim’s knowledge.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0believes the hack<\/strong> went on for\u00a0four months<\/em>. It employed antivirus software<\/strong> company Symantec for online security\u2026 but the hackers still installed 45 pieces of malware (malicious software) on their computer<\/strong> systems. Of that number, the Symantec systems identified and quarantined only one.”<\/p>\n
