{"id":13076,"date":"2012-12-12T22:43:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-13T04:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/?p=13076"},"modified":"2012-12-12T22:43:00","modified_gmt":"2012-12-13T04:43:00","slug":"my-first-receiver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ishmaels.net\/blog\/2012\/12\/12\/my-first-receiver\/","title":{"rendered":"My first receiver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got into <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>radio<\/strong> in 1973.&#160; Actually I was a little into <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>radio<\/strong> way before that as my Dad was a <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>radio<\/strong> technician.&#160; He sold and repaired <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>CB<\/strong> radios in the 60\u2019s and early 70\u2019s.&#160; He had a shop in the basement and in his spare time, which I wonder how he had any spare time, he worked on <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>CB<\/strong> radios.&#160; In the day of tubes, and single channel crystal radios with few that had the full 23 channels he was the repair wizard.&#160; I always envied his ability to check them, find bad parts and fix them to they could work better.&#160; In the 60\u2019s a <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>lot<\/strong> of people had CB\u2019s it was the craze that was to sweep the country and it even developed it\u2019s own <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>set<\/strong> of terms but that is not the focus of this post.&#160; <\/p>\n<p>My first <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>radio<\/strong> was a Simpson radio.&#160; It was a tube <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>radio<\/strong> that only had like 5 channels transmit, but had a variable tune for all 23 on receive.&#160; I don\u2019t even remember the model.&#160; But the first real step into <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Ham<\/strong> <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>radio<\/strong> happened in 1974.&#160; I was living in a small town south of Tulsa OK.&#160; In Tulsa in those days there were two <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Ham<\/strong> shops\u2026 Tulsa Radio Co. and a new <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> in BrokenArrow.&#160; I had heard about the <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> in <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>BA<\/strong> and made a stop there <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> day\u2026 they had several radios and a station <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>set<\/strong> up with ever more old used units for sale\u2026 I browsed the shop several times\u2026 <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>one<\/strong> Saturday I had the saved money and as I remember is was about $75 and with that I bought a National 300 receiver\u2026 I knew I needed a license to transmit and at that point I didn\u2019t have that license so I just got a big neat <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>receiver<\/strong> that had a <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>lot<\/strong> of knobs on it\u2026 boy was I set\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/nc300.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"nc300\" border=\"0\" alt=\"nc300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ishmaels.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/nc300_thumb.jpg?resize=518%2C342\" width=\"518\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <b>National NC-300<\/b> is a dual conversion amateur band <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>receiver<\/strong> that tunes:&#160; 1.8-2, 3.5-4, 7-7.3, 14-14.4, 21-21.5, 26.5-27.5 and 28-29.7 MHz The <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>radio<\/strong> dial is also pre-calibrated for the use of optional converters:&#160; 49.5-54.5, 143.5-148.5 and 220-225 MHz It has a turret-type band display. It features a smooth 40:1 tune ratio with flywheel tuning. This <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>radio<\/strong> does not have a built-in speaker.
