Despite the fact that the United States has some of the lowest energy costs per kilowatt hour of any nation, many people are looking at ways to save energy in order to save money on their monthly bill. What some people do not understand is if everyone saves money on their bill, our power plants will receive less revenue, and their operating costs will go up, so our energy bills per kilowatt hour will rise.
It seems like kind of a Catch-22 for conservation. On one hand you were told that you will save money if you reduce your energy usage and that it will help the nation as we will be burning less fossil fuels in the coal-fired plants to produce 60% of our electricity, yet, on the other hand as we all save more, our costs will go up.
Additionally, there is a big push for alternative energy sources to create electricity. This means we have to build new power plants to generate energy, and the cost to build those plants will have to have a return on investment, which will also show up in our energy bills.
No matter what anyone says, if we conserve more energy, and switch to alternative energy we are all going to be paying more. Throw in the new “Cap and Trade” bill in Congress and we could see our energy costs skyrocket by 400% over the next 10 years. This will also increase the cost to all of our manufacturing facilities around the country, and make us even less competitive globally.
All this chaos does provide an opportunity for those that write articles on energy savings around the home, and energy costs; in that, not a lot of people are talking about the reality right now, because everyone is hyping alternative energy, solar power, LED lights in the home, insulation, and other methods to save energy in each household.
